Introduction
What is General Text?
General Text is a collaborative workspace for plain text. It gives you a place to create, organize, and edit text files — then keeps them in sync across your devices and with your teammates in real time.
But General Text is more than a file editor. It's built around the idea that plain text is the most durable, flexible, and composable format for knowledge. On top of that foundation, General Text adds another layer:
- Apps — lightweight web applications that plug into your workspace to provide specialized editing interfaces for your data.
Together, these let you build a personal or team knowledge environment where your text files are living documents, made interactive through custom tools.
Philosophy
General Text is built on a few principles:
- Plain text first. Your content is stored as plain text files, not locked in a proprietary format. You can always read, export, and process your data with any tool.
- Real-time by default. Every edit syncs instantly to all connected devices and collaborators. There's no "save and refresh" — changes just appear.
- Composable tools. Instead of building one monolithic editor, General Text provides a platform where small, focused apps can plug in and work with your files. Build the tools you need, or install ones others have made.
